Boiling the water concentrates the lead. It does not remove it

Water leaves as steam and the metal stays behind. The habit most parents rely on makes this one parameter worse.

Water used in baby food

Testing can focus on the tap or filtered outlet used for bottles, cereal and food preparation.

Sample the water actually used

Kitchen taps, refrigerator lines and selected filtered outlets can be tested when relevant to the family's concern.

Accredited laboratory analysis

Results provide measured information for the specific contaminants included in the testing scope.

Lead testing for food preparation

Boiling the water concentrates the lead in it

HabitEffect on leadWhat it leaves open
Boiling before useConcentrates it, since water leaves as steam and lead remainsEverything, and it makes this parameter worse
Drawing from the cold tapHelps, since hot water is more aggressive toward metalHow much is present in the cold supply
Running the tap firstHelps, since lead builds while water stands stillWhat is contributed further along the supply path
Bottled water for bottlesAvoids the tap for that one useThe tub, bottle washing and every other household use
A filter rated for leadAddresses it while the cartridge has capacityWhether lead was there, and whether the unit still works
A laboratory lead scopeMeasures it at the taps you name under stated conditionsHow it may differ after plumbing work

Lead in Water Testing for Households Preparing Infant Food

Water is used to reconstitute formula, to prepare cereals and purees, to wash bottles and to rinse produce. For an infant, the tap is therefore an ingredient in most of what is consumed.

Olympian Water Testing provides professional lead in water testing for families preparing infant food, expectant parents and households throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

What Household Practices Achieve

Drawing from the cold tap reduces exposure, because lead dissolves more readily into hot water and hot water has been standing within a heater.

Running the tap briefly before drawing also reduces exposure, since it clears water that has been standing in the fixture. Boiling has the opposite effect on this parameter, because water leaves as steam while the metal remains.

Where Lead Enters

Water acquires lead where it contacts components containing it: the water service line, lead tin solder at pipe joints, and brass along the length of the supply path.

Lead bearing brass appears today in hose bibbs and exterior spigots, backflow preventers and pressure reducing valves, angle stops and shutoff valves beneath sinks and behind appliances, faucet cartridge housings and stems, water heater nipples and relief valves, faucet bodies in kitchens and bathrooms, ball and gate valves on domestic hot and cold isolation, tub and shower mixing valves, well pump and booster pump wetted components. Because the standard permits a content rather than requiring an absence, such fixtures return measurable lead on analysis.

How the Sampling Event Is Conducted

Our sampling technicians perform the site visit at the taps used for preparation, for washing and for bathing.

An ordered series of draws is taken along the supply path, a stagnation period is requested of the client where required, and screens at the outlet are left undisturbed.

Understanding Our Reporting

Our reporting identifies each sampling point, the recorded conditions, the method applied, the reporting limit and the measured concentration.

Establishing the position first allows any treatment subsequently selected to be matched to what is present. Thirty five years of practice sits behind the work, carried out under NELAP accredited laboratory analysis.

Common questions

Should the water used for baby food be tested?
If there is concern about the household water, testing the cold-water outlet used for cooking and food preparation provides information about the water actually entering meals and bottles.
What contaminants can matter even when baby food is cooked?
Cooking or boiling does not remove every chemical or metal contaminant. Lead and other nonvolatile substances require testing rather than relying on heat treatment.
Can I compare kitchen tap water with filtered water?
Yes. Testing both can show the laboratory results before and after the existing filter or treatment device.
What should private-well families test before preparing infant food?
Common well parameters include bacteria, nitrate, arsenic and metals, with additional testing such as PFAS or pesticides considered based on location and specific concerns.
